Knowsley Safari Park: Baboons Warm Up with Baked Potatoes as Snow Hits Merseyside

As much of the country became blanketed in snow, a heart-warming sight came from Knowsley Safari Park as their troop of baboons munched on baked potatoes in order to keep warm.

The Merseyside park, which is usually open all year round, was forced to close its gates to visitors on Monday (04/01) due to the adverse weather conditions.

Despite the closure, keepers braved the snow and ice to tend to the park's multitude of wild animals, many of which are suited to more tropical climates. In fact, the only animals that are happy to stay outdoors in all weather are the park's collection of bison, which are used to the extreme cold of the North American winters.

As well as the piping hot baked potatoes, Knowsley Safari Park's baboons also have access to covered housing to shield themselves from the icy conditions outside.

General Manager of Knowsley Safari Park David Ross said: "In these conditions the baboons absolutely love a baked potato. It has been fantastic to watch adults and youngsters alike collecting the steaming spuds from the keepers and enjoying something warm in the snow.

Ross added that the decision to close the park was not taken lightly. "The snow made it impossible," he said. "It's probably the worst conditions we've experienced since the mid-90s.

"But our staff battled their way in this morning, and they have been working hard to ensure all our animals are as well-fed and cosy as possible."

Honoring your companion

The loss of a spouse or partner is one of the most challenging and a difficult moment to deal with in a lifetime and the loss is one that is felt for months and years afterwards. Not only are there arrangements to be made and decisions that require instant action but the emotional turmoil can be devastating. Regardless of plans that have been put in place, there is no way to totally prepare yourself for that loss. Gratefully, there are several wonderful companies that have created specialty products that will enable consumers to find an affordable and personal way to remember those that have passed before them and find some peace and comfort.

One of the most affordable and unique ways of memorializing those that have passed is with a cremation keepsake. This type of jewelry consists of pendants, rings and bracelets that will hold or cradle your choice of precious honors or tributes to a loved one that has passed away. This innovative and eclectic line of pendants is creative and diverse and includes everything from hearts to crosses to designer keepsakes as well as a line of children pendants, pet lockets and other unique and interesting jewelry items. Most pendants and keepsakes include your choice of cording or matching chain and Jewelry Keepsakes is one online company that has a medley of different upgrades that make it easy to personalize and customize your selection to reflect your own sense of style and taste as well as be a direct reflection of your beloved that has passed away.

Memorial jewelry can be a special way that will honor the bond between two individuals. Of these keepsakes, almost all of them are obtainable in both sterling silver and 14K gold vermeil over sterling silver. Companion keepsake pendants feature a well recognized symbol of two individuals joined in a never-ending circle of love and devotion. This beautiful keepsake will hold a small amount of engraving on the back of the keepsake and often two different styles of engraving for you to choose from. A lovely gift box may be included with your companion keepsake urn purchase and most often your selection arrives in three to five business days when being delivered in the continental United States.

Additionally, there are several other ways to honor the loss of your spouse. You can choose an exotic heart urn pendant that will capture your small memory of your darling and keep it safe and secure and close to your heart. A large array of heart pendants include the addition of precious and semi-precious gemstones and many are available in sterling silver, gold vermeil and even 14K gold. Customers often have the option of choosing the chain or cording that best suits them. A sterling silver box chain or snake chain or a 14K gold snake chain or box chain would make a lovely addition to any heart cremation remains jewelry chosen to honor your spouse or a couple.

Bespoke Aquariums

Many people choose to have aquariums installed in their homes or places of work. Not only are they used to keep fish in the sense of having pets, they also make a great feature to any room. The options available to anyone looking for an aquarium are huge; you can have one installed in a wall, one installed as a wall, or have you ever fancied drinking a cup of fresh coffee over a coffee table comprised of a fish tank? This article aims to look at a few options you have available to you when considering getting a special aquarium installed.

The first step is to try and come up with a good idea of what it is you require. Try to think about where you'd like to position your new aquarium and what work might be involved. Obviously having a free standing tank will require a lot less work that having one put into a wall etc. It's from these initial ideas that you can start gathering some research and quotes. There are companies who specialise in bespoke aquarium manufacture and also in the installation of aquaria. As with anything, it's always recommended that you gather at least three quotes. Don't always go with the cheapest option; try to judge a company on the quality of their work and the professionalism of their service.

Having a picture frame aquarium put up is a very popular option. It has a great effect and they are often described as living works of art. There are many sizes available, and you can also vary the frame to make sure it suits your room perfectly. A lot of aquarium shops will stock ready-made picture frame aquariums, or for that extra something special you could always go for a custom built picture frame aquarium. Most aquariums can be adapted for tropical fish through to cold water or marine species. Again, t his is worth thinking about before you purchase your tank. The size of aquarium needed will obviously depend on what species you would like to keep and of course the amount of fish you require. Also remember to think about space needed for heaters, filters, plant life and furniture.

Having a tank installed inside a wall can look extremely good but will obviously cost a bit more money as more work is needed to install the tank. You will probably also need to have a tank made specifically to fit your wall space. Most companies who specialise is bespoke aquariums will have a team of installers who specialise in getting your tank in perfectly. They will probably also work closely with architects and interior designers to make sure your new aquarium fits perfectly into its surroundings. The best time to have an in wall or through wall tank installed is probably when completing any oth er renovation work in the house or work place. This way it can be designed to fit in with any renovation work, and of course the installation will be a lot simpler than if you had to go make and make changes to a wall at a later date.

Making Your Dogs Crate Experience Pleasant With Dog Mats

The dog mat may be one of the best solutions for your dog's crate whether it be because you are sick of washing that dirty old bed, you are constantly on the go with vacations and other travels, or you simply want to provide more padding in his or her kennel. The dog mat is very easy to clean, and it can be used wherever your dog needs a little extra cushioning.

If your dog likes to roll around or change his sleeping position quite frequently, then the dog mat will not prevent him from doing so, and it is also great if he simply wants to find a spot to lay down for a while regardless if it his designated sleeping spot.

Dog mats can also be an effective tool in training since this can be to point where you have your him lay down or where you make him sit. When you bring him to this spot, he will know that this is where he needs to obey your commands when they are spoken to him.

The basic mat comes in a number of different shapes, styles, and sizes, all of which can be chosen based on what your dog would most likely require in order to be completely comfortable. Dog mats are often made with a reinforced material which makes them very durable and able to stand the test of time. These mats are made tough, but are still soft enough for your dog to lay on and also are safe for washing. They come in a variety of colors and also come in a few unique animal designs so you'll be guaranteed to find a color or style that suits you and your dog.

If you are concerned about the environment, there are many dog mats out there that are very eco-friendly and are made from materials that are not as harmful to the environment than others. These types of mats are made from recycled materials which require the consumption of less energy to make, and contain less harmful chemicals and other materials that are found in other dog mats.

If you want to make your dogs crate or kennel a little more comfortable, but don't want to deal w ith a full fledged dog bed that may have to be cleaned quite often, or if you're looking to help out the environment a little, then you'll want to consider the dog mat as your pet comfort solution.

Reviewing Midwest Dog Crates

A Midwest Dog Crate will provide that safe and secure environment that your dog deserves. Dogs are naturally den animals, so why not use the power of nature and cater to that natural instinct that they are born with. When it comes to a product like this, quality and affordability are the two things that come into my mind. Often it is easy to find one or the other but very difficult to find both quality and affordability in any product, and a crate for your dog is no different. Midwest Dog Crates provide an exception to this, and the best thing is that there is one that will fit any dog and any budget.

Midwest Dog Crates have been around since the 1960. Since then, the company has gained a reputation for being some of the best crates in the business. A Midwest crate is durable, fashionable, and has been regarded as one of the best values in the business. Midwest Pet Products is a division of Midwest Metals, so they are able to offer great products at affordable prices. They offer an ever increasing inventory of excellent products. Most are made from metal, as that is their specialty, but they have been expanding into some of the other popular areas of the business.

Midwest has had a lot of success with their wire crates. Some of the more popular items are reviewed here. The ever popular I-Crate is one of the best selling wire dog crates on the market. It is the least expensive of the metal pet cages they offer, but offers great quality at a very affordable price. The Life Stages Series offers better quality at a slightly higher price. This is really a great item The Life Stages Series has become one of the most popular products in the niche will rival any of its competitors in price and quality. The Select series is the top of the line series of a Midwest Dog Crate. This crate is the premier product offered by this company in this category of products. The Select Series offers some of the best features you can find in a dog cage such as a three doors and heavy duty construction. The good thing to know is that whatever your budget is, there is a Midwest crate for you.

This great company has also become a leader in the soft dog crate world in recent times. The company offers some of the latest technology available in soft, portable style items. The ever popular Canine Camper and Canine Camper Day Tripper are some of the best products Midwest Dog Crates has come up with in my opinion. They offer state of the art technology and are the only pop up kennels on the market that I am aware that set up and fold down by just "popping and zipping," technology. For the dogs and people who love the outdoors, these crates are a must have!

These products have been developed and tested by a company with a lot of experience in the field. As the pet industry grows and new and exciting products hit the market, there is no doubt that Midwest Dog Crates will be up there on the list of new innovations. I look forward to new and exciting items that will someday bear the name of Midwest Dog Crate.

How To Find The Perfect Dog For Your Family

If you're looking to find a new puppy for your family, but you're not sure where to look in order to find that perfect puppy, there are a number of places that you can look. Some of the best ways to find a new puppy are in the classifieds, online, or at your local dog shelter. These are all great places you can look to find that perfect furry little friend for your family.

The classifieds section of your local paper is a great way to locate dogs for sale and is really one of the more convenient ways of doing so since most of the listings you will find will be in your area. The only downfall to using the classifieds section of your local paper is that the listings are usually not categorized very neatly, rather they are all placed under one section in which you have to find what you are looking for by browsing through all of them. Another benefit to using the classifieds of your local paper is that you increase the chance of buying a dog from someone that you migh t now, depending on the size of the reading area for the paper, and what percentage of that reading area are people you may know. Buying from people you know is typically preferred over other options.

Another source for finding dogs for sale is online is through online classifieds. Many websites such as FarmMedley.com offer free ad listings to those who have dogs for sale in which you can post many details like breed, age, color, location and more. FarmMedley.com also provides free advertising for all types of animals including horses, alpacas, llamas, goats, and just about any other type of farm animal. Online classifieds are great because you can search for dogs for sale in your area and beyond with ease. You're not confined to your local newspaper's reading area. One word of advise is that when you use online classifieds, be sure to research fully, contact the seller and meet them face to face, and be sure to get an in person look at the dog before you make an y purchase decisions. You wouldn't browse your local newspaper classifieds, call up the person who is selling a dog you're interested in, and tell them you'll take it without even seeing it would you? No, you would want to see it first. The same is true with online classifieds.

Finally, if you're looking for a new puppy to bring home, and don't really care to much about the specific breed, or are open to all types of breeds, you may want to check with your local humane society or dog shelter. Dog shelters always have puppies and even older dogs that are looking for good homes so you'll have no trouble finding a dog for your home. Getting a puppy or dog from a dog shelter is often viewed as a preferred method for getting a dog over buying one from a breeder because it helps keep the number of dogs that need a home down. By adopting a dog you are doing a good deed because you're helping out a dog that may not otherwise have a good home to go to.

If you want t o get a new puppy for you and your family but are not sure where to get one from, you'll definitely want to check out one of these three options. Whatever method you choose, be sure to research and go through all of the different possibilities before making your final decision.

How to Keep Your Pets Safe during the Holidays

Keeping children safe and keeping your pets safe are two different things, especially when children have an understanding of wrong and right and have the ability to reason and learn. While pets to have an ability to learn they are still notorious for getting into things that smell good, taste good or both without being able to think about the consequence. This holiday season take precautions to keeping your pets safe so you can avoid any emergency veterinary visits that can disrupt your holiday.

The first thing you want to remember when it comes to your pets safety this season is that tree decorations as well as gift wrappings seem to be appealing to pets. This appeal causes a problem however, because ingestion of ribbons or paper can not only hurt the digestive tract of your animal but ingestion of tinsel is actually a choking hazard. To prevent any problems with holiday decorations make sure you avoid tinsel, keep all gifts out of your pets reach and leave undecorated space at the bottom of your Christmas tree so that your pet does not eat the ornaments.

The next holiday hazard for your pet is seen in many seasonal plants such as poinsettia, holly, mistletoe as well as others. The milk sap of the poinsettia plant contains unknown toxic principles and causes excesses salivation and vomiting in animals but not death. The holly plant contains many toxins, especially in the berries, and leads to abdominal pains, vomiting and diarrhea with death being rare. Mistletoe on the other hand is the most dangerous of the plants; it contains toxic proteins found in all parts of the plant and lead to vomiting, diarrhea, dilated pupils, rapid and labored breathing, shock, and death from cardiovascular collapse within hours of ingestion. Thus, when it comes to holiday plants put them somewhere where you are sure your animal can't get to them but to be one hundred percent sure, just do not buy them.

Another severely poisonous substance for animals is the antifreeze used in cars. While many people do not have this liquid simply lying around their house, many do not think about it when they are walking their pets or when their pets are outside with them in the garage. The toxic ingredient in the antifreeze is its major component, ethylene glycol, which makes up 95% of the product. Just one lick of sugary smelling antifreeze will poison you pet and will lead to symptoms including a sensitive abdomen. If not treated, this poisoning will lead to kidney failure and then death, so make sure you are keeping a very watchful eye on your pets when they are outside this holiday season.

The next holiday hazard to be aware of for your pet is people food. While it is undeniable that every owner slips their pet a treat now and then, the holidays often means many people feeding many different things to your pet. The thing to be aware of is that too much people food can cause severe pain and discomfort for your dog. Not only that but the ingestion of bones can lead to splintering which can then cause many resulting problems including internal bleeding. Chocolate is another problem for pets and in large quantities can lead to poisoning and death for any pet. Also, many people often have individually wrapped candies set out for their quests to enjoy, however, the sweet smell can attract pets and can lead to them ingesting not only the candy but also the wrappers which could lead to issues with the digestive tract as well as kidney failure from the sugar.

With all the Christmas lights and other electronic appliances being plugged in around the holiday season it is important to keep a sharp eye on your pet to ensure that they do not chew on any wires. Chewing on wires could lead to the electric shock of an animal and if severe enough could lead to death. To avoid this problem this year, try to keep as many wires as possible off the ground and away from your pet.

The last major holiday hazard to watch out for this year when it comes to your pets it the Christmas tree water. Many stands are filled with water as well as preservation chemicals that can lead to the death of your pet, not only that but Christmas tree stands are a breeding ground for bacteria because of the fact that water is standing for weeks without any movement or circulation. So make sure that your pet can't get under the tree to lap up water and ensure that their water bowel is always filled so they don't have to go looking for any.

The above pet hazards are the major ones to look out for this holiday season but there are still other problems that your pet may run into. To keep your pet out of harm's way be aware of everything they are doing and do not trust them too much.
